Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition and a leading cause of vision loss in people over 50. It affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision and is essential for activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces.

Types of Macular Degeneration

Dry AMD (Atrophic)

  1. Most common form
  2. Caused by thinning of the macula and buildup of yellow deposits called drusen
  3. Progresses slowly and can lead to gradual vision loss
  4. No cure, but progression can be slowed with lifestyle changes and AREDS2 / Macuhealth Plus vitamin supplements

Wet AMD (Neovascular)

  1. Less common, but more serious
  2. Caused by abnormal blood vessels under the retina that leak fluid or blood
  3. Leads to faster and more severe vision loss
  4. Treated with injections (anti-VEGF therapy) to prevent further damage

Common Symptoms of AMD

  1. Blurred or fuzzy central vision
  2. Difficulty recognizing faces
  3. Straight lines appear wavy or distorted
  4. Dark or empty areas in the center of your vision
  5. Colors appear faded or less vibrant

Important: AMD does not cause complete blindness, but it can severely affect central vision.

Are You at Risk?

Risk factors include:
  • Age 50 and older
  • Family history of AMD
  • Smoking
  • Poor diet (low in leafy greens and omega-3s)
  • Excessive sun exposure

Early Detection is Key

Regular comprehensive eye exams are essential, especially if you're over 50 or have risk factors. Early diagnosis allows for effective management to slow progression and preserve vision.

How We Help

Our AMD evaluations may include:
  • OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) – detailed scan of retinal macular layers
  • Optos Fundus Imaging – wide-field retinal imaging to monitor macular health
  • Visual acuity testing
  • Amsler Grid screening

Treatment plans are tailored to your needs, whether it’s monitoring, nutritional guidance, or advanced medical therapies.

Don’t Wait – Protect Your Sight
