Your eyes are more than just your window to the world, they are a window to your overall health.

The need for a comprehensive eye exam by an Optometrist is critical to your overall health. Vision and ocular health conditions are not always accompanied by recognizable symptoms and there is often an increased risk if timely treatment is not initiated. Systemic disease such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, autoimmune disease such as MS, brain tumors and some cancers and many others can be detected during your eye examination.

A comprehensive exam is different from a visual screening that is often completed at a workplace assessment, license certification or visit to your family doctor’s office.

Recommended Exam Frequency

20-65 years old

  • The Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) recommends a comprehensive eye exam once every 2 years, or more frequently as advised by their optometrist.
  • Individuals with a history of diabetes, those taking certain medications or those with other health risks should have an exam every 1 year, or as directed by their optometrist.

65+ years old

  • The CAO recommends an eye exam every 1 year.
  • With age, the risk of eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts increases, and so more frequent monitoring may be recommended based on your needs.

Why Regular Eye Exams are Important

Regular eye exams help to:
  • Detect early signs of disease or damage
  • Monitor changes to vision and eye health over time
  • Expedite early diagnosis and treatment
  • Provide personalized recommendations and treatment options
  • Prevent irreversible vision loss

At the conclusion of your exam, your optometrist at Innisfail Eyecare Centre will apply their clinical expertise to assess your overall eye health and visual system and you’ll receive a personalized treatment plan.
